Tognoli Time

The Advantage

A few weeks back we had 1Flourish Advisor and best-selling author, Patrick Lencioni do a 90 minute zoom session with our 1Flourish Advisors and the entrepreneurs of the companies we have invested in. We had over 80 people attend for what was the best event I have attended on the importance of Organizational Health, Character and Culture in an organization.

During his 90-minute session Patrick talked about how most organizations can be broken up into 3 buckets.

  • 1/3 of the people are fired up to be on the team and will do whatever it takes to help the team win. They are typically the top performers.
  • 1/3 of the people are on the other spectrum. They complain and aren’t going be happy or a team player regardless of what we do.
  • 1/3 of the people sit in the middle. Good people looking for direction and attention. The future team players…or not.

As a leader, manager, teacher, or coach there are only so many hours in the day. We need to decide how we are going to spend our time.

What most do is spend the majority of their time on those who demand their time…the complainers. Yes…I have been guilty of it too.

Unfortunately, when we do that, the one third in the middle looking for attention and direction, see the best way to get it. You guessed it…be a complainer.

Then guess what happens with our team players and top performers? Frustration and irritation that they aren’t getting any attention.

What a mess!!

We need to be helping and spending the majority of our time with the top performers on our team. Not only because they deserve it, but because they will help us turn the middle 1/3 into team players like them. And not wasting time on the complainers will make them take a hike and find a better fit. Thank God!
